A solid knowledge of statistical methods is necessary to plan successful, productive scientific investigations. In this course, the basic techniques used for the analysis of biological data will be presented. At the end of the session, the students will have the knowledge necessary to select the appropriate methods to use in most situations.


  • Introduction. Utility and use of statistics in biology.
  • Different types of data. Principle of statistical texts. The null hypothesis. Distributions.
  • Permutational  testing.
  • Two sample comparison: variances (F test) and means (Student's T test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon test...)
  • Comparison of more than two samples: variances (Bartlett's test,...) and means (one-way and two-ways analyses of variance).
  • Analysis of covariance
  • Chi-square test
  • Correlation
  • Simple linear regression: Model I and II
  • Multiple and polynomial regression. Variation partitionning
  • Multidimensional data analysis: ordination, clustering, Mantel test...
  • Survival analysis
